這首黑人靈歌收錄在指揮兼作曲家John Wesley Work Jr. 1907年蒐集出版的歌本，因為提到耶穌降生，也是聖誕節常唱的福音歌曲。Work在大學教授拉丁文與希臘文，是第一位蒐集黑人靈歌的非裔美國人，對於保存美國黑人的口傳音樂文化功不可沒。
